The Town of Creston has recently updated the Water and Sewer Rates Bylaws with respect to secondary suites in residential homes in an effort to make the rates more fair and equitable. Previously, conforming secondary suites have been charged an additional residential rate, while non-conforming secondary suites have not been charged. The updated Bylaw states that all secondary suites will be charged a fee equivalent to 50% of the single-family residential utility rate.
A secondary suite is defined as “a self-contained dwelling unit with its own kitchen and bathroom, which is separate from the principal dwelling in a house. It can be located either within the principal dwelling or in an accessory building on the same lot as the principal dwelling”.
We ask that all secondary suite owners whose secondary suites are not included on their 2017 utility bill report this information to the Town of Creston at 250-428-2214 or firstname.lastname@example.org by June 30, 2017 to avoid potential fines.
The Town will be actively identifying unreported secondary suites through information obtained from numerous sources such as social media advertising, websites, newspaper ads, inspections, etc.
