June 24, 2015 STAGE 3 MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
Attention CITIZENS:
Please be advised that the Town of Creston and the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) have had to make the shift from STAGE 2 water restrictions to STAGE 3. This shift is due to the water supply from Arrow Creek being threatened with historic low flows for this time of year.
If we can all pull together and stick to our WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM then, hopefully, these mandatory restrictions can be relaxed in the not too distant future – with a little help from “mother nature” in the way of precipitation. It is important to understand that if our water supply continues to deplete, then it will be necessary to move to STAGE 4 restrictions.
Please note that all Town maintained facilities are adhering to the STAGE 3 restrictions. This means that flower baskets and planting areas will be hand watered with non-potable water and grass will begin to brown. New landscaping around the Pine Street/Railway Boulevard intersection will be watered between 6 am and 10 am as per the STAGE 3 restrictions. Our SPLASH PARK at Centennial Park will remain open at this time, but this could be subject to change. The fountain at Millennium Park will be topped up with water trucked from our non-potable water supply.
During my term as Mayor (6 years), and in the memories of most locals, we have not experienced such a severe low water flow situation at this time of year. While watering of lawns is not allowed, watering of gardens, trees and shrubs can occur between 6 am and 10 am. Hand watering can occur at any time of the day. Citizens are also reminded to reduce use of water-using appliances where possible.
If we all VOLUNTARILY support this effort then ENFORCEMENT should not be necessary – please talk to your neighbours and ask them to cooperate.
The RDCK and the Town of Creston are working together to improve our water delivery system in the coming years, in order to maximize the distribution of potable water to the communities of Creston and Erickson.
