Introducing the Creston Valley Housing Corporation's First Project: Enhancing Community Living in Creston

Creston, B.C. — September 24, 2025

The Creston Valley Housing Corporation (CVHC) is excited to announce the launch of its first project aimed at addressing two of Creston's most pressing community needs - attainable housing and childcare.

The CVHC was established in late 2024 with the mandate to facilitate a supply of suitable, attainable and sustainable rental and ownership units that are accessible to a larger portion of the population. Since its establishment, the CVHC has been busy orienting its Board of Directors and embarking on their first project: a 110-space childcare facility and 42(+) unit rental apartment complex located at 1501 Cedar Street.

This project is made possible through the award of the Provincial ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund. This fund works to create new licensed childcare spaces throughout B.C. and improve access to childcare for families who want affordable, quality care.

“With this provincial investment, families in Creston will have access to high-quality child care closer to home,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. “These new spaces give parents more flexibility to plan their work and family schedules, while ensuring children have a safe, engaging place to learn and grow.”

"I'm grateful that the Province could support the Creston Valley Housing Corporation on its first project, that will provide much needed housing and child care for the community,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Kootenay Central. Local people know the needs of their communities best, and when the Province can collaborate with community leaders on projects that help to create a brighter future, everyone wins. I want to thank the CVHC team for the work they do, and I look forward to seeing this project come to fruition!"

“This project is about helping local families live, work, and thrive in our community,” said Mayor Arnold DeBoon. “We know that access to housing and childcare are two of the biggest challenges facing Creston families, and this project tackles both at once. We are deeply grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund.”

A Dual Solution Approach

The centerpiece of this project is a state-of-the-art, multi-functional building that effectively combines residential and childcare facilities. The ground floor will feature:

  • A 110-space childcare facility with infant and toddler and school age spaces,
  • Managed by a devoted non-profit operator,
  • Designed to fulfill the increasing demand for reliable, inclusive childcare services; and,
  • Created to support diverse family needs within the Creston community.

An additional three-stories of residential rental units will be constructed and feature:

  • A total of 42(+) units available in a variety of configurations: studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments,
  • Designed to offer attainable living options for individuals and families; and,
  • Focused on community-building and accessibility.

The CVHC is finalizing the financing for the residential apartment complex project component.  Ultimately the project is structured to ensure long-term financial viability and self-sustainability.

Impact on the Community

This dual-purpose initiative reflects the newly founded CVHC’s dedication to creating a thriving, family-friendly environment in Creston. By nurturing attainability and accessibility in housing and childcare, the project aims to significantly enhance residents' quality of life.

“Mayor DeBoon added, “The creation of the Creston Valley Housing Corporation shows that we are taking real steps to address local housing needs. We’re excited to see this first project take shape and make a difference for the people who call Creston home.”

The new childcare centre stands to make a substantial impact by delivering high-quality care and educational opportunities to Creston's young families, easing the childcare shortage and empowering parents to pursue their careers with the confidence that their children are in good hands.

Furthermore, the addition of 42(+) rental apartments not only provides more attainable housing options but also promotes a sense of community within the vibrant atmosphere of Creston.

Looking Towards the Future

The Creston Valley Housing Corporation remains steadfast in its mission to foster sustainable community development. This project marks the beginning of a promising journey for the Creston Valley.

Project Timeline: Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
