The Town of Creston is pleased to announce that Phase 2 of the ʔak̓uǂni (pronounced a-kooth-nee) project is getting started!

This innovative project is all about creating a vibrant, welcoming, and exciting space in the heart of Creston. It’s a place where people can come together to enjoy the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, support local businesses, visit the Visitor Centre, learn about local history, and spend time with others. It provides a lively space where community and reconciliation flourish, and shows respect for the land and cultures that came before us.

“ʔak̓uǂni is more than a construction project—it’s a reflection of who we are as a community,” said Mayor Arnold DeBoon. “It honours the past, celebrates the present, and builds toward a vibrant future.”

Phase 1 was completed in 2024 and included important work like landscaping and underground services. Now, thanks to funding from the Province of British Columbia through the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP), Phase 2 can begin.

Phase 2 will transform this functional space into a vibrant, rich, and beautiful public place. Key elements include public art, timber gateway features, public water fountains, misters, interpretative signage, shade panels, improved gathering spaces, farmers’ market area improvements, and improvements to the Armitage Centre creating an inviting environment for tourists and locals.

“The support we’ve received from the Province and the community has been incredible,” said Mayor DeBoon. “We’re excited to see this next phase come to life—and even more excited for the people of Creston to enjoy it for years to come.”

The Town received nearly $1 million in grant funding from REDIP$997,918.20—to help bring phase 2 of the project to life. “We’re thrilled to continue building a space that the whole community can enjoy and feel proud of. A place filled with art, culture, vegetation, and community gathering spaces,” said Mayor DeBoon.

The Town of Creston would like to thank all community members for their support and would also like to give a special thank you to those who wrote letters of support for this project.
